Poets

jblindsight  posted her shock at this today, and it is shocking and sickening:

Robert Hass served as poet laureate from 1995 to 1997.  I'm surprised it was that long ago.  It seems like yesterday.  He is seventy years old now, and he and his wife are both wonderful poets and people.   Are they really a threat?   Well, yes, maybe so when we consider that "the pen is mightier than the sword".

Then, I wonder where that phrase originated.

I am enchanted to learn that Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to Thomas Paine in 1796, in which he wrote: "Go on doing with your pen what in other times was done with the sword."

If only those words rang continually true.
