Here is Jane today!!
Once long ago
before the sky was born
and the winds of space blew across the earth,
the moon, who lived inside her then
heard the moans and whistles
of that starry breath.
Curious
it pushed itself up and out
of the earth’s broad rib
to see what made the shrilling.
When the moon’s round head appeared
the earth scolded and chastised it for its rashness
and warned it of the dangers
of the wind
to no avail
and ever since the little moon
has hung outside the earth
sometimes lonely for the shelter
sometimes full and round and proud.
