Good Morning!

I am going to the birthday party for a friend who will be ninety, and the requested gift is poems, so I have been looking for poems that seem to fit the occasion.

If you have any suggestions, please send them my way.

Here are two so far.

Long Sight In Age

            ---Philip Larkin

They say eyes clear with age,
As dew clarifies air
To sharpen evenings,
As if time put an edge
Round the last shape of things
To show them there;
The many-levelled trees,
The long soft tides of grass
Wrinkling away the gold
Wind-ridden waves- all these,
They say, come back to focus
As we grow old.

This is Lucille Clifton from her book 'good woman'.

i am running into a new year
and the old years blow back
like a wind
that i catch in my hair
like strong fingers like
all my old promises and
it will be hard to let go
of what i said to myself
about myself
when i was sixteen and
twentysix and thirtysix
even thirtysix but
i am running into a new year
and i beg what i love and
i leave to forgive me
