I think both these articles demonstrate so much of what is wrong in government today. There is no character in many of our leaders. They are quitters and crooks. I'm not sure a people can be led by such a low standard and we do have character representation in our president. I hope that is enough. This stuff at the top is what filters down, is the example we give our children.
I wonder how our schools counteract this kind of news. Today I was thinking about the gift of reading and writing. In the society and time in which I grew up, it was a given that you would learn to read and write. I wonder if we appreciate the gift of it enough, because it was seen as a given. I wonder if as many children today will learn to read and write. Class sizes are increased and school budgets are cut around the country. I find it tragically sad that each child in this country, in all countries, may not have the opportunity to learn to read and write.
A friend wrote a poem about a peach and how when she was ten and out hiking with a friend at camp and thinking she would die of thirst, the friend would not give her a bite of the peach. She has carried the feeling of that injustice for fifty years, that feeling that the girl had a choice as to whether or not she shared, had in a way the power of life and death over her.
I wonder if we think daily of the choices we make as to what we share. Many of us hold a peach.
How many bites do we offer to others and when it may actually be our life or theirs, how then do we care?
As the population of the earth continues to increase, the lifeboat we share seems daily even smaller. The choices continue to squeeze.
