Today my book group meets in the East Bay for swimming, food, and wine. Yesterday, "granmamma" and I took Zach and his three year old friend Carter to Stinson Beach for a day of delight. We thought they would get tired, but sweet little legs and feet ran and jumped and climbed and we followed in exhilaration twined. Zach is growing up. We watch in amazement. Perhaps that is what this summer is about for me, enjoying observing the young mature. When does one step in and when does one step back? Zach and Carter followed a gull on the beach. I followed them and discovered the teenagers have their own place to sun and flirt. Twas fun!!
The Red Poppy
- Louise Gluck
The great thing
is not having
a mind. Feelings:
oh, I have those; they
govern me. I have
a lord in heaven
called the sun, and open
for him, showing him
the fire of my own heart, fire
like his presence.
What could such glory be
if not a heart? Oh my brothers and sisters,
were you like me once, long ago,
before you were human? Did you
permit yourselves
to open once, who would never
open again? Because in truth
I am speaking now
the way you do. I speak
because I am shattered.
Enjoy your day, however gathered or shattered, opened or closed. May it be exuberant and luxurious with petals and flowers, sun, earth, moon, sky.
