It is important to remember that CA is immense and diverse and grows one-third of the food of the nation when one makes jokes about this entertaining state, which became a state 160 years ago today. It seems these jokes are about southern CA not the part of the state where I live. :)
This comes from the Writer's Almanac:
Non-California writer Truman Capote said, "It's a scientific fact that if you stay in California you lose one point of your IQ every year." (I wonder what he would say today about Florida. Maybe it's the heat.)
Comedian Fred Allen said, "California is a fine place to live — if you happen to be an orange."
Novelist Alison Lurie said, "As one went to Europe to see the living past, so one must visit Southern California to observe the future."
San Francisco poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti called Southern California the place "where the American Dream came too true."
