Happiness -

Success is not the key to happiness.  Happiness is the key to success.

A Beautiful poem to welcome October!

"A Letter in October"

Dawn comes later and later now,
and I, who only a month ago
could sit with coffee every morning
watching the light walk down the hill
to the edge of the pond and place
a doe there, shyly drinking,

then see the light step out upon
the water, sowing reflections
to either side -- a garden
of trees that grew as if by magic --
now see no more than my face,
mirrored by darkness, pale and odd,

startled by time. While I slept,
night in its thick winder jacket
bridled the doe with a twist
of wet leaves and led her away,
then brought its black horse with harness
that creaked like a cricket, and turned

the water garden under. I woke,
and at the waiting window found
the curtains open to my open face;
beyond me, darkness. And I,
who only wished to keep looking out,
must now keep looking in.

Thoughts -

My book group met tonight and had a wonderful time at the Hotel Mac in Point Richmond.   While waiting at Larkspur Landing to gather our car pool, I noticed that my view of the bay was blocked by a thick concrete structure.  I walked over to check it out.   The Department of Homeland Security is active in Marin.  They built it to provide security for those of us who live in this hot-bed of terrorism, where commuters go back and forth to the city.

We are giving the government too much money.  This is ridiculous.

One woman in my book group read a brilliant and humorous letter she wrote to complain about her sub-zero refrigerator which has not lived up to expectations.  She received an amazing response.  We were all impressed that people do read letters and that intelligent comment can mean a financial gain.  She is a middle-school teacher who focuses on persuasive writing with her students.  She now has an example in hand.  She can show them the check and they will understand there is value in knowing how to put words on a page.

We were all happy to know there  is a live body at the end of the chain.  Now, if we can just find one to dismantle the ridiculous structure at Larkspur Landing.  I am not pleased to know that the Department of Homeland Security is active so close  to my home.

The moon is up and I am soon to bed.  I'm tired, and floating on the wings of poems.
