a show of excess -

This week I read about the $300 million dollar yacht anchored off Sausalito. I intended to go see it but then yesterday I was in Tiburon and there it was - huge, absolutely huge, and an intriguing shape. I knew I needed an up-close view, so we journeyed to Sausalito early this morning. It looks like a model, a prop, from a James Bond movie.  A side panel opened and we hoped to see the launch of one of the $1 million boats designed to carry people to shore, but it was just a tantalizer.  No boat emerged.

It is one thing to have a boat like this sitting there for a short time, one boat, but if destroys the scale of everything around.  Suddenly the buildings in the city seem tiny.  I hope the widening disparity between the rich and the poor doesn't mean we have more visits like this.

Oddly, this article makes it sound like the money was legitimately earned. We know someone from Russia who has a more accurate view of what it takes to buy a boat like this. I don't think I'd want to meet our "maker" with that on my conscience.
