Read the poem and why he wrote it. http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/23734
I've been re-reading Jane Hirshfield's wonderful book, Women in Praise of the Sacred, 43 Centuries of Spiritual Poetry by Women.
This morning I am struck by this poem by Chiyo-ni, who lived from 1703 to 1705.
D.T. Suzuki translated it like this:
Oh, morning glory
The bucket taken captive
Water begged for.
Robert Aitken translated like this:
The morning glory!
It has taken the well bucket,
I must ask elsewhere for water.
How would you respond if you came to the well and found the bucket entwined by the morning glory vine?
