My fellow passengers on this journey:

As many of you know from my comments on the last post, a speeding car came at my son and he fell and hit his head.  He was unconscious for a time.  A CT scan shows he is okay.

What does that mean for any of us?  I have been with what might have happened, death, amnesia, so have tortured myself in ways even beyond what actually occurred.

A good friend sent me these words today:

I have a very dear friend and teacher who has had many injuries to his brain and many seizures... he has bouts of amnesia while walking around Guadalajara -- a huge city -- thank goodness so many people know him there and someone always sees him and directs him back to his home.  scary - yes -- and also reminds us that safety/security may be about our connections to each other - our friends - our acquaintances...

Even before this happened, I have been with fragility, how tender and vulnerable we are.  How can people not realize how much we need each other?  How do they vote against care for the whole?  Any one of us could be crippled, blinded, hurt at any time.  We need each other.

I am touched by the outpouring of support I've received.  I have realized this reminder of our vulnerability and this wake-up call touched on that fear I still carry, that fear around the death of my father in an accident when I was 19.  The words of my friend comfort me.  Yes, connection.

I just started reading Kurt Vonnegut: Letters by Kurt Vonnegut and Dan Wakefield.  Kurt's message is the same as E.M. Forster: "Only connect."  I recommend this book for all sorts of reasons. Just the introduction is worth it to buy the book.  It is available on Kindle, which is how I am reading it.  I find myself wanting to share the whole introduction with you.   I choose this.

Speaking at the Episcopal Church in 1980, Vonnegut said, "I am enchanted by the Sermon on the Mount. Being merciful, it seems to me, is the only good idea we have received so far. Perhaps we will get another good idea by and by - and then we will have two good ideas."

He was also influenced by Eugene V. Debs: "While there is a lower class I am in it. While there is a criminal element I am of it. While there is a soul in prison I am not free." Vonnegut called those words "a moving echo of the Sermon on the Mount."
