Jane and Jim had quite a Saturday night!! This band played at their wedding. Jane says: Here's the story about our Saturday night dancing to Lavay Smith swing band at the Alameda Eagles Hall. There were so many different people...an older black couple... she with dreds and perky boots, a cotton dress...he with baggy pants and a slow style.... regulars for Friday night zydeco, they said; a wiry guy with a tattoo on his biceps dancing with a tiny Asian woman in a flirty dress, two white people large and plain who didn't look like dancers who had their own dance style that fit them both. It was quite a trip and Lavay and her band were cookin...she had an incredible trombonist! Wow!! Jane's Poem: It was a slice, he'd say, meaning it was real. The Eagles Hall, crepe papered, was hung with tube lights. It didn't look so bad when the overheads were dimmed. The bartender was original equipment. If ever there was a floor just made for dancing, this was it. The chanteuse would wiggle past the drummer. There was only so much room. "This one's for the fellas," she would pucker. And all the hotshots would head out to the floor. The ones with boots and tattoos, the ones with pearls and pouts. The ones in T-shirts advertising some funky delta bar: "Helpin ugly people have sex since 1965."
