Butterflies and Ladybugs!

On November 30th, after our morning free-write, we discovered that I had written of butterflies, and Jane had written of ladybugs. I loved the juxtaposition of our poems, but for some reason the internet was not cooperating, and I did not receive the email of her poems until today. I place them here now. Enjoy as you remember back two days.

Lady bugs gather
on damp stream banks
huddled together
the mass of their tiny red bodies
look at first like seeds ripening
along the stemmy reeds and grasses.
They wait now for the moment
when a chill wind moving east
blows by. Then they will open
their polkadot shells and extend
their flightless wings
to rise and float on currents of air
for days, weeks
fed by the bit of sun
they have ovened up
from a long summer
of eating aphids.
They wait to arrive
at the hurdle of the mountain's spine
and drop gently onto alpine soil
where they will sleep away the winter
dreaming of wildflowers.

First day after winter's rains begin
pink clouds stacked like boxcars in the waiting port
dark clouds swab the sky.
