Center -

Here is Richard Strozzi Heckler's definition of center from his excellent book, Anatomy of Change.

"Center is the starting place in the continuum of moving through change.  Center is like the eyepiece of the telescope: it establishes a focus and place of departure for the entire spectrum of learning ....

It is not that we have to find our center and then maintain it at all costs.  Center is more of a reference point to return to, so we can relate to our life situations in a complete way.  When Morihei Uyeshiba, the founder of aikido, was asked if he ever lost his balance, he replied, "Yes, all the time, but I regain it so fast that you do not see me lose it."

This "state of center" is a doorway, a place to begin feeling our deeper urges, our possibilities in the world, the expansivenss of our excitement, and also our need to be nourished in quiet, contained ways."
