This is from Jon Carroll's column this morning.
I have been following with interest the testimony of former Surgeon General Richard Carmona, who has joined the long list of former Bush administration officials complaining to Congress that they were not allowed to do their jobs because political concerns trumped all other considerations.
He was discouraged or prevented from speaking publicly about issues as diverse as stem cell research, needle exchange and the effectiveness of abstinence-only sex education. Science said one thing and the Bush administration said something else; Carmona wanted to stick with science, which was the wrong choice.
For those of you who've been paying attention, none of that is really a surprise. But this may be: Carmona said that senior administration officials discouraged him from attending the Special Olympics because of the charitable organization's ties with the Kennedy family.
"I was specifically told by a senior official, 'Why would you want to help those people?' " So, in the Bush universe, the Special Olympics is a secret front for the propagation of secular liberal ideas. I mean, "shameless" doesn't even begin to cover it.
